Gluck https://emerygluck.com/THE-SPIRAL-1 The Spiral Established in 2023 by Emery Gluck, The Spiral is a series of interdisciplinary installations and dinners exploring the phenomena of spiraling. It exists as a secret art space in Los Angeles and abroad. Conversations with the viewers at The Spiral no. 1 formulate the themes for The Spiral no. 2, and the chain continues. The series takes the shape of a spiral, as does each individual exhibition. Everything connects. The Spiral began with a curiosity of what unravels inside a spiral and what a shift in perspective of the typically “negative” experience of spiraling can offer. This project is an invitation for the viewer to tilt their gaze, re-imagine the direction of a spiral, and become curious about what embracing time inside of it can reveal. The artwork inside The Spiral installations is designed to encourage a slower type of looking than one’s inclination might be. The work prompts the viewer to spend time in The Spiral and to see themselves in the art. transparent drawings, projected poem, and relational food performance. The Spiral is a series of interdisciplinary installations exploring the phenomena of spiraling. ‘A reconstituted echo or a spiral retelling.’ - Édouard Glissant, Poetics of Relation &nbsp; Each component of this installation is a translation of the others, echoing the question: What is inside the spiral with you? The process began with a transparent and reflective spiral print in response to the phenomenon of spiraling along with Édouard Glissant’s text, Poetics of Relation, in which he discusses “écho-monde” or, the world of things resonating with one another. Halleta Alemu wrote a piece in response to the drawing and her own experience of spiraling. Emery Gluck translated her poem into a recipe that was served at the opening for viewers to eat as they visually consumed the installation. In making this work, Gluck displays that edges are also meeting points. The interaction of the prints and the projected poem (the interaction of two disciplines and two artists) created a glowing, amorphous light that spiraled around the room. The prints are designed to sway in response to the movement of the people and air in the room, and the light that they created highlighted this very specific responsiveness. The Spiral no. 1 asked viewers, “What is inside the spiral with you?” The most common answers were ‘transportation’ and ‘the unknown.’ So, The Spiral no. 2 explores the relationship of these two things in Travel to an Unknown Place. &nbsp; Reflections often occur in transit. I look out a window and see myself mirrored and layered with a view of the world outside me. I am inside the view, shaping it. My inside merges with the outside, there is a visual interaction, despite a physical separation. Unknown places become intertwined through the window-mirror. We layer. We meld. We melt. The Spiral no. 2 is about seeing yourself in the unknown, gazing into the overlaps between yourself and the world around you. Installation by Emery Gluck The Spiral is a series of interdisciplinary installations exploring the phenomena of spiraling. The window is the mirror. The window is the painting. The window is the screen. The window is the threshold between the inner world and what surrounds it. The window is where two dualities meet at their edges, only to realize they are each other. Like the treat of childhood where two opposite flavors are one, the icy translucent tart melts into the cloudy milky sweet and a Dreamsicle exists. The Spiral no. 4: Dreamsicle is a video, ice, and reflective drawing installation, designed to be viewed from both within and outside the exhibition space. Utilizing the window as a threshold, Dreamiscle is a hermeneutical exploration of the slipperiness between memory-dreams and experience. Inside: The video loops across the walls, artworks, and bodies, wrapping itself around the viewer. Inside, Dreamsicle is an abstract dimension where nothing is defined and forms melt into each other, coated in the projected video and its reflections and refractions. Outside: The video is clear now. In the night air, the viewer can make out the moving blue forms of the video more concretely. Hands on ice: gliding, melting desire. It is the same ice that is melting inside, but now the separation is palpable as the viewer experiences Dreamsicle on the other side of the glass. What is it to separate yourself from a looping projection? And is anything ever really separate? Or does the one-ness of instability endure? Is everything just a convergent reading of the same text with different lenses? Is that the dreamy tragic treat of it all? Mind and matter continue their ephemeral wave. &gt; curated by Tamara del Rosso since soon after, is an exploration into the life-cycle of a memory. It is comprised of 15 memory-drawings, a sound piece, and a melting ice work with a live-stream projection of its change-of-state. The live-stream video is layered over semi-transparent 10-minute recordings of the ice and its proximate surroundings throughout the night, creating a&nbsp; fusion of past and present in the projected video. ︎ How do conscious memories live inside of us? Born at each remembrance. The process of re-collecting experience is depicted in all its transient and fluctuating intensity, encountering a psyche that holds more than a mere archive. Materialized of "pastness," memories emerge anew, shaped not only by our evanescent sensations, but by our ever-evolving record of them. The ice piece, a melting drawing, complicates the notion that memories are static and fixed in their uncovering. The image of the ice continuously morphs and reveals itself in response to its surroundings, eventually becoming a non-truth, a memory. The suspended "memory drawings" are the result of the artist's conceptual 15-day memory exercise: make a drawing on day one with mylar, saltwater, ink. Every day after, attempt to replicate the previous day's drawing from memory. Subject to reflective shifts and airy sways, each hanging piece creates a series of indelible moments for the viewer to find themself inside of. The sound for this piece is built from a series of asynchronous loops constant repetitions that are also never the same. Subject to randomized modulations, each time a loop is heard, it is different: louder or quieter, closer or farther away.
